
Quality Talk in Global Contexts
QT has also been used to support students’ English learning in global contexts.
In South Africa, QT was recontextualized as a tool to support English language arts teachers in low-resourced, rural schools. In one study conducted in 8th- and 9th-grade classes, researchers found that implementation of QT led to fundamental changes in the classroom learning environment, leading to increases in student talk and student-initiated questions during classroom discussions.
Likewise, in mainland China, QT was enacted to promote Mandarin-speaking students’ English language proficiency. During this study, students’ written argumentation in English increased in both quality and quantity.
