Quality Talk in Mathematics
QT was adapted for elementary mathematics teaching methods courses to support mathematics teacher educators’ professional competence for teaching about and enacting discourse-intensive pedagogy with preservice teachers.
The aim of this project was to promote preservice teachers’ mathematical reasoning and problem-solving ability as well as to provide experience facilitating mathematics discussions with elementary students. In one study, teacher educators demonstrated increased knowledge of and efficacy for discussion-based pedagogy after participating in QT, with concurrent increases in preservice teachers’ mathematical reasoning and argumentation during small-group discussions.
